Buyer's Guide to Headboards

Does your bed look like something is missing? Something not quite right about your bedroom? Can't get comfy when you sit up in bed? If this sounds like you, use our handy guide to buying a headboard to finish off your bedroom furniture in style.

Headboards are the perfect piece in the bedroom furniture jigsaw as they offer the opportunity to update your bedroom quickly and easily. If you have a divan style bed then it will not have a permanent headboard attached and this could end up leaving your bed looking a little bare and unattractive. A well chosen headboard will be an attractive addition and our handy pointers will help you make the perfect choice.

Size

You will probably know your bed size by a name such as 'single' or 'double' rather than the actual measurement. The divan beds on our site are all named this way and full measurements are also provided if you need a reference. All our headboards are detailed in the same way.

So, if you have a double bed (135cm or 4ft6 wide) simply select a double headboard. Some headboards are designed to be 'oversized' and so a double headboard may have a total width of more than 135cm wide. This is a design feature and the fittings will still be in the right place.

Style and Shape

Deciding on the style and shape of headboard you want is where the fun really starts and where you can create a statement or choose to be subtle and have something that is purely functional. The choice really is yours.
A simple padded fabric headboard in a rectangular or slightly curved shape will fit in with any room. This kind of headboard won't take centre stage, allowing other pieces of furniture to be the focus. Although you can always make it stand out by choosing a bright coloured fabric.

A wooden headboard needn't be old fashioned. There are a range of designs out there and fashionable wood finishes such as dark woods will make a world of difference. The other option is a metal headboard.

If you would love a romantic wrought iron bedstead but can't justify getting rid of your divan set (or can't live with out the drawers underneath!) then a decorative metal headboard could be just the thing for you. Many of our metal bedsteads are available as a headboard only and with loads of designs and colours to choose from it shouldn't be too hard to find the one to make your bedroom look really special.
